Details
A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft NET Framework (the affected version unknown) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component Null Byte Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:
Interpretation conflict in ASP.NET in Microsoft .NET Framework 1.0, 1.1, and 2.0 for Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003, and Vista allows remote attackers to access configuration files and obtain sensitive information, and possibly bypass security mechanisms that try to constrain the final substring of a string, via %00 characters, related to use of %00 as a string terminator within POSIX functions but a data character within .NET strings, aka "Null Byte Termination Vulnerability."
The bug was discovered 07/10/2007. The weakness was released 07/10/2007 by Jeroen Frijters (Paul) with Microsoft as MS07-039 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-0042 since 01/03/2007. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25700 (MS07-040: Vulnerabilities in .NET Framework Could Allow Remote Code Execution (931212) (uncredentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90401 (Microsoft .NET Framework Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS07-040)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS07-039 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4723.
