Microsoft NET Framework PE Loader memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft NET Framework (affected version not known). Affected is some unknown functionality of the component PE Loader. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The PE Loader service in Microsoft .NET Framework 1.0, 1.1, and 2.0 for Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003, and Vista allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors involving an "unchecked buffer" and unvalidated message lengths, probably a buffer overflow.

The bug was discovered 07/10/2007. The weakness was published 07/10/2007 with Microsoft as MS07-039 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-0041 since 01/03/2007. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 101005 (CentOS 6 / 7 : sudo (CESA-2017:1574)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90401 (Microsoft .NET Framework Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS07-040)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS07-039 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8998.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (34637), Tenable (101005), SecurityFocus (BID 24778†), OSVDB (35954†) and Secunia (SA26003†). Similar entries are available at VDB-3181, VDB-3182, VDB-3178 and VDB-3179. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
