A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Apple QuickTime up to 7.1.2 (Multimedia Player Software). This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality. Apple QuickTime before 7.1.3 allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted FlashPix (FPX) file, which triggers an exception that leads to an operation on an uninitialized object.
The weakness was published 09/12/2006 by Mike Price (Sowhat) with McAfee AVERT Labs (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-4389 since 08/28/2006. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115408 (Apple QuickTime Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2006-09-12)).
Upgrading to version 7.1.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11815.
