A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird up to 1.5.0.6 (Web Browser). This issue affects an unknown code block. Heap-based buffer overflow in Mozilla Firefox before 1.5.0.7, Thunderbird before 1.5.0.7, and SeaMonkey before 1.0.5 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a JavaScript regular expression with a "minimal quantifier."
The bug was discovered 09/14/2006. The weakness was presented 09/15/2006 by Martijn Wargers (shutdown) with Martijn Wargers (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-4565 since 09/06/2006. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

Upgrading to version 1.5.0.7 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9090.
