Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft XML Core Services (the affected version is unknown). Affected is the function substringData. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Microsoft XML Core Services (MSXML) 3.0 through 6.0 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via the substringData method on a (1) TextNode or (2) XMLDOM object, which causes an integer overflow that leads to a buffer overflow.

The bug was discovered 08/14/2007. The weakness was disclosed 08/14/2007 with iDefense as MS07-042 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-2223 since 04/24/2007. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in Javascript. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25880 (MS07-042: Vulnerability in Microsoft XML Core Services Could Allow Remote Code Execution (936227)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90405 (Microsoft XML Core Services Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS07-042)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS07-042 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 12279. In this case the pattern substringData is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5460.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (35195), Tenable (25880), SecurityFocus (BID 25301†), OSVDB (46083†) and Secunia (SA26447†). The entries VDB-3242 and VDB-3731 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
