Details
A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) (unknown version) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function substringData of the component OLE Automation. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Object linking and embedding (OLE) Automation, as used in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP2, Server 2003 SP1 and SP2, Office 2004 for Mac, and Visual Basic 6.0 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via the substringData method on a TextNode object, which causes an integer overflow that leads to a buffer overflow.
The bug was discovered 08/14/2007. The weakness was presented 08/14/2007 with iDefense as MS07-043 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-2224 since 04/24/2007. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
