Linux Kernel 2.6.x superblock_doinit null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.x (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function superblock_doinit. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

Linux kernel 2.6.x up to 2.6.18 and possibly other versions, when SELinux hooks are enabled, allows local users to cause a denial of service (crash) via a malformed file stream that triggers a NULL pointer dereference in the superblock_doinit function, as demonstrated using an HFS filesystem image.

The bug was discovered 11/14/2006. The weakness was published 11/21/2006 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at projects.info-pull.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2006-6056 since 11/21/2006. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24944 (Mandrake Linux Security Advisory : kernel (MDKSA-2007:078)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115509 (Red Hat Kernel Security Update (RHSA-2007:0014)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (30278), Tenable (24944), SecurityFocus (BID 22625†), OSVDB (30297†) and Secunia (SA22887†).
