The Installer application in Apple Mac OS X 10.4.8 and earlier, when used by a user with Admin credentials, does not authenticate the user before installing certain software requiring system privileges.
The bug was discovered 11/28/2006. The weakness was disclosed 11/14/2006 by Benjamin Williams with Open Network Security (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2006-4404 since 08/28/2006. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 07/11/2019).
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 23740 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2006-007)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
