The Security Framework in Apple Mac OS X 10.3.9, and 10.4.x before 10.4.7, does not properly search certificate revocation lists (CRL), which allows remote attackers to access systems by using revoked certificates.
The bug was discovered 11/28/2006. The weakness was disclosed 11/14/2006 by Jose Nazario with Open Network Security (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2006-4410 since 08/28/2006. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 23740 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2006-007)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115471 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2006-007 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2006-11-28)).
Upgrading to version 10.3.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
