Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in IBM AIX 5.2/5.3 (Operating System). Affected by this vulnerability is the function sendrmt of the component bellmail. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the domacro function in ftp in IBM AIX 5.2 and 5.3 allows local users to gain privileges via a long parameter to a macro, as demonstrated by executing a macro via the $ command.
The issue has been introduced in 10/01/2002. The weakness was released 10/31/2007 by Joshua J. Drake (iDefense) with VeriSign iDefense Labs (Website). The advisory is shared at www14.software.ibm.com. The public release was coordinated with IBM. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-4217 since 08/08/2007. Access to the local network is required for this attack. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a private exploit are known.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1855 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 28980 (AIX 5.2 TL 10 : bos.net.tcp.client (U812065)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118418 (IBM AIX FTP Buffer Overflow Vulnerability).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ibm.com. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (38162), Tenable (28980), SecurityFocus (BID 26260†), OSVDB (40407†) and Secunia (SA27437†).
