The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the domacro function in ftp in IBM AIX 5.2 and 5.3 allows local users to gain privileges via a long parameter to a macro, as demonstrated by executing a macro via the $ command.
The issue has been introduced in 10/01/2002. The weakness was published 10/31/2007 by Joshua J. Drake with iDefense (Website). The advisory is shared at www14.software.ibm.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-4217 since 08/08/2007. The attack can only be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1856 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 28980 (AIX 5.2 TL 10 : bos.net.tcp.client (U812065)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118418 (IBM AIX FTP Buffer Overflow Vulnerability).
