A vulnerability was found in IBM AIX 5.2/5.3 (Operating System). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is an unknown part of the component xlock. Stack-based buffer overflow in the domacro function in ftp in IBM AIX 5.2 and 5.3 allows local users to gain privileges via a long parameter to a macro, as demonstrated by executing a macro via the $ command.
The issue has been introduced in 10/01/2002. The weakness was released 10/31/2007 by Joshua J. Drake with iDefense (Website). The advisory is available at www14.software.ibm.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-4217 since 08/08/2007. The attack needs to be done within the local network. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1856 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ibm.com.
