Details
A vulnerability was found in IBM AIX 5.2/5.3 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the component tftp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the domacro function in ftp in IBM AIX 5.2 and 5.3 allows local users to gain privileges via a long parameter to a macro, as demonstrated by executing a macro via the $ command.
The issue has been introduced in 10/01/2002. The weakness was presented 10/31/2007 by Joshua J. Drake (iDefense) with IBM (Website). The advisory is shared for download at www14.software.ibm.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-4217 since 08/08/2007. Access to the local network is required for this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1856 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 28980 (AIX 5.2 TL 10 : bos.net.tcp.client (U812065)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118418 (IBM AIX FTP Buffer Overflow Vulnerability).
