A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Office 2000/2003/2004/Xp (Office Suite Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the component Spreadsheet. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). Heap-based buffer overflow in Microsoft Excel 2000 SP3, 2002 SP3, 2003 SP2, 2004 for Mac, and v.X for Mac allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a BIFF8 spreadsheet with a PALETTE record that contains a large number of entries.
The bug was discovered 09/25/2006. The weakness was released 01/09/2007 by Greg MacManus (iDefense) with iDEFENSE Labs (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-0031 since 01/03/2007. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
After 3 weeks, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is possible to download the exploit at saintcorporation.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2773 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 23998 (MS07-002: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Excel Could Allow Remote Code Execution (927198)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110050 (Microsoft Excel Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS07-002)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4966.
