A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Office 2000/2003/2004/Xp (Office Suite Software). This issue affects an unknown code block. Microsoft Excel 2000 SP3, 2002 SP3, 2003 SP2, 2004 for Mac, and v.X for Mac allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a malformed string, aka "Excel Malformed String Vulnerability."
The bug was discovered 01/09/2007. The weakness was shared 01/09/2007 by NSFocus Security Team with NSFOCUS Security Team (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-0029 since 01/03/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2773 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4975.
