A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Microsoft Office 2000/2003/2004/Xp (Office Suite Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown code. Microsoft Excel 2000 SP3, 2002 SP3, 2003 SP2, 2004 for Mac, and v.X for Mac allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via malformed IMDATA records that trigger memory corruption.
The bug was discovered 01/09/2007. The weakness was presented 01/09/2007 by Jeff Gennari with CERT (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-0027 since 01/03/2007. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2773 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 23998 (MS07-002: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Excel Could Allow Remote Code Execution (927198)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110050 (Microsoft Excel Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS07-002)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4965.
