A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Office 2000/2003/Xp (Office Suite Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality. Microsoft Outlook 2002 and 2003 allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a malformed VEVENT record in an .iCal meeting request or ICS file.

The bug was discovered 01/09/2007. The weakness was disclosed 01/09/2007 by Lurene Grenier with Sourcefire (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-0033 since 01/03/2007. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2773 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 23999 (MS07-003: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Outlook Could Allow Remote Code Execution (925938)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110049 (Microsoft Outlook Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS07-003)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 9841. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4960.
