A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Outlook 2000/2002/2003 (Groupware Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component Office Saved Search Handler. The manipulation as part of a OSS File leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in the Advanced Search (Finder.exe) feature of Microsoft Outlook 2000, 2002, and 2003 allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted Outlook Saved Searches (OSS) file that triggers memory corruption, aka "Microsoft Outlook Advanced Find Vulnerability."
The bug was discovered 05/12/2006. The weakness was published 01/09/2007 by Stuart Pearson (ERRor) with Computer Terrorism as MS07-003 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-0034 since 01/03/2007. The attack needs to be done within the local network. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 242 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 23999 (MS07-003: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Outlook Could Allow Remote Code Execution (925938)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110049 (Microsoft Outlook Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS07-003)).
Applying the patch MS07-003 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 9847. In this case the pattern S|00|a|00|v|00|e|00|d|00|S|00|e|00|a|00|r|00|c|00|h|00| is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4959.
