A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Apple Mac OS X 2.1.5 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component Installer. Format string vulnerability in Apple Installer 2.1.5 on Mac OS X 10.4.8 allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via format string specifiers in a (1) PKG, (2) DISTZ, or (3) MPKG package filename.

The bug was discovered 01/26/2007. The weakness was disclosed 01/26/2007 by LMH (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-0465 since 01/23/2007. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25081 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2007-004)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115539 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2007-004 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2007-04-19)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 16002. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4065.
