A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple iMovie 6.0.3. This issue affects the function AppKit. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a format string vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-134. Format string vulnerability in iMovie HD 6.0.3, and Safari in Apple Mac OS X 10.4 through 10.4.10, allows remote user-assisted attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via format string specifiers in a filename, which is not properly handled when calling the NSRunCriticalAlertPanel Apple AppKit function.
The bug was discovered 01/30/2007. The weakness was shared 01/31/2007 by Ilja van Sprundel (Sean) with RISE Security (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-0646 since 01/31/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 28212 (Mac OS X < 10.4.11 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2007-008)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
