A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 7 (Web Browser). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function cloneNode. Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and 7 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via uninitialized or deleted objects used in repeated calls to the (1) cloneNode or (2) nodeValue JavaScript function, a different issue than CVE-2007-3902 and CVE-2007-5344, a variant of "Uninitialized Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The bug was discovered 05/22/2007. The weakness was disclosed 12/11/2007 by Sam Thomas (TippingPoint) with ZDI as MS07-069 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-3903 since 07/19/2007. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and a private exploit are known.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 203 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS07-069 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5823.
