Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 7 Document code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer up to 7 (Web Browser). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the component Document Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 through 7 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted website using Javascript that creates, modifies, deletes, and accesses document objects using the tags property, which triggers heap corruption, related to uninitialized or deleted objects, a different issue than CVE-2007-3902 and CVE-2007-3903, and a variant of "Uninitialized Memory Corruption Vulnerability."

The bug was discovered 07/20/2007. The weakness was presented 12/11/2007 by Peter Vreugdenhil with ZDI as MS07-069 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-5344 since 10/10/2007. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 144 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 29313 (MS07-069: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (942615)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100054 (Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (MS07-069)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS07-069 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5822.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (38715), Tenable (29313), SecurityFocus (BID 26817†), OSVDB (39120†) and Secunia (SA28036†). Additional details are provided at eweek.com. See VDB-3506, VDB-3502, VDB-3509 and VDB-3507 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
