A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Microsoft DirectX 7.0/8.1/9.0c/10.0. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component SAMI File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. Buffer overflow in Microsoft DirectShow in Microsoft DirectX 7.0 through 10.0 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted (1) WAV or (2) AVI file.
The weakness was disclosed 12/11/2007 by Jun Mao with iDefense as MS07-064 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-3895 since 07/19/2007. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 29308 (MS07-064: Vulnerabilities in DirectX Could Allow Remote Code Execution (941568)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90419 (DirectX Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS07-064)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS07-064 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 12971. In this case the pattern RIFF is used for detection.
