Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Mozilla Firefox up to 2.0.0.1 (Web Browser). This affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:
The child frames in Mozilla Firefox before 1.5.0.10 and 2.x before 2.0.0.2, and SeaMonkey before 1.0.8 inherit the default charset from the parent window, which allows remote attackers to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks, as demonstrated using the UTF-7 character set.
The weakness was published 02/23/2007 by Johnny Stenback (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers as MFSA2007-02 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-0996 since 02/16/2007. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 24703 (CentOS 3 / 4 : seamonkey (CESA-2007:0077)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156209 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Thunderbird (ELSA-2007:0078)).
Upgrading to version 1.5.0.10 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8954.
