The bug was discovered 04/17/2007. The weakness was disclosed 04/19/2007 by Daniel Ball, Geoff Franks and Jamie Cox with Mu Security research team (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-0743 since 02/05/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 25081 (Mac OS X Multiple Vulnerabilities (Security Update 2007-004)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115539 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2007-004 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2007-04-19)).
It is possible to mitigate the problem by adding an authentication mechanism. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (25081), SecurityFocus (BID 23569†), OSVDB (34867†), Secunia (SA24966†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1017942†). The entries VDB-2060, VDB-2870, VDB-33942 and VDB-34769 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
