A vulnerability was found in Apple QuickTime 7.4.4 (Multimedia Player Software). It has been rated as critical. Heap-based buffer overflow in quickTime.qts in Apple QuickTime before 7.4.5 on Windows allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted PICT image file with Kodak encoding, related to error checking and error messages.

The bug was discovered 04/02/2008. The weakness was disclosed 04/03/2008 by Ruben Santamarta with ZDI as HT1241 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-1020 since 02/26/2008. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
