Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X 10.4 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in mDNSResponder in Apple Mac OS X 10.4 up to 10.4.9 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application termination) or execute arbitrary code via a crafted UPnP Internet Gateway Device (IGD) packet.
The bug was discovered 05/24/2007. The weakness was shared 05/25/2007 by Michael Lynn with Juniper Networks as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-2386 since 04/30/2007. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57631 (GLSA-201201-05 : mDNSResponder: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115560 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2007-005 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2007-05-24)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 6 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 1388. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5387.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (34493), Exploit-DB (16871), Tenable (57631), SecurityFocus (BID 24159†) and OSVDB (35142†).
