THQ S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl 1.x RecievePacket memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in THQ S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl 1.x. This affects the function MultipacketReciever::RecievePacket. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the IPureServer::_Recieve function in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl 1.0006 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a compressed 0x39 packet, which is decompressed by the NET_Compressor::Decompress function.

The weakness was disclosed 07/01/2008 by Luigi Auriemma (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at aluigi.altervista.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-6703 since 04/10/2009. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.

The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $100k and more.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (43454), Exploit-DB (31998), SecurityFocus (BID 29997†), OSVDB (46626†) and Secunia (SA30891†). The entries VDB-3748, VDB-3749, VDB-47679 and VDB-47678 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
