A vulnerability has been found in THQ S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl 1.x and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function NET_Compressor::Decompress. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the IPureServer::_Recieve function in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl 1.0006 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a compressed 0x39 packet, which is decompressed by the NET_Compressor::Decompress function.
The weakness was presented 07/01/2008 by Luigi Auriemma (Website). The advisory is shared for download at aluigi.altervista.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-6703 since 04/10/2009. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.
