The mozIJSSubScriptLoader.LoadScript function in Mozilla Firefox before 2.0.0.15, Thunderbird 2.0.0.14 and earlier, and SeaMonkey before 1.1.10 does not apply XPCNativeWrappers to scripts loaded from (1) file: URIs, (2) data: URIs, or (3) certain non-canonical chrome: URIs, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via vectors involving third-party add-ons.
The weakness was released 07/02/2008 by moz_bug_r_a4 with Mozilla as MFSA2008-26 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-2803 since 06/20/2008. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 33399 (CentOS 3 / 4 : seamonkey (CESA-2008:0547)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115851 (Mozilla Firefox and SeaMonkey Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 2.0.0.15 eliminates this vulnerability.
