Buffer overflow in the convert function in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 SP4, 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000) SP4, and 2000 Desktop Engine (WMSDE) allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary code via a crafted SQL expression.
The bug was discovered 07/08/2008. The weakness was published 07/09/2008 by Brett Moore as MS08-040 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2008-0086 since 01/03/2008. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The successful exploitation requires a authentication. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS08-040 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6033.
