A vulnerability was found in Microsoft SQL Server (Database Software) (version now known). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Memory Page Reuse Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. SQL Server 7.0 SP4, 2000 SP4, 2005 SP1 and SP2, 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000) SP4, 2005 Express Edition SP1 and SP2, and 2000 Desktop Engine (WMSDE); Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE) 1.0 SP4; and Internal Database (WYukon) SP2 does not initialize memory pages when reallocating memory, which allows database operators to obtain sensitive information (database contents) via unknown vectors related to memory page reuse.
The bug was discovered 07/08/2008. The weakness was shared 07/09/2008 as MS08-040 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-0085 since 01/03/2008. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34311 (MS08-040: Microsoft SQL Server Multiple Privilege Escalation (941203) (uncredentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19236 (Microsoft SQL Server Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (MS08-040)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS08-040 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 3 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 13896. In this case the pattern TAPE is used for detection.
