Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component Statement Handler. The manipulation as part of a INSERT Statement leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Integer underflow in SQL Server 7.0 SP4, 2000 SP4, 2005 SP1 and SP2, 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000) SP4, 2005 Express Edition SP1 and SP2, and 2000 Desktop Engine (WMSDE); Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE) 1.0 SP4; and Internal Database (WYukon) SP2 allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary code via a (1) SMB or (2) WebDAV pathname for an on-disk file (aka stored backup file) with a crafted record size value, which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow, aka "SQL Server Memory Corruption Vulnerability."

The bug was discovered 07/08/2008. The weakness was disclosed 07/09/2008 by Brett Moore (iDefense) with Insomnia Security as MS08-040 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-0107 since 01/07/2008. The attack may be launched remotely. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34311 (MS08-040: Microsoft SQL Server Multiple Privilege Escalation (941203) (uncredentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
