Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01, 6, and 7 accesses uninitialized memory in certain conditions, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and execute arbitrary code via vectors related to a document object "appended in a specific order," aka "HTML Objects Memory Corruption Vulnerability" or "XHTML Rendering Memory Corruption Vulnerability," a different vulnerability than CVE-2008-2258.

The weakness was disclosed 08/13/2008 by Sam Thomas with Microsoft as MS08-045 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-2257 since 05/16/2008. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 33874 (MS08-045: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (953838)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
