A vulnerability was found in ClamAV up to 0.93 (Anti-Malware Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown function of the component CHM Archive Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
libclamav/chmunpack.c in the chm-parser in ClamAV before 0.94 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a malformed CHM file, related to an "invalid memory access."
The weakness was published 09/03/2008 by Hanno Böck (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at int21.de. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-1389 since 03/18/2008. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34299 (GLSA-200809-18 : ClamAV: Multiple Denials of Service), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115983 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2008-007 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2008-10-09)).
Upgrading to version 0.94 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at svn.clamav.net. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8885.
