Details
A vulnerability has been found in MySQL up to 1.7.5 (Database Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function processoldclienthello of the file handshake.cpp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple buffer overflows in yaSSL 1.7.5 and earlier, as used in MySQL and possibly other products, allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via (1) the ProcessOldClientHello function in handshake.cpp or (2) "input_buffer& operator>>" in yassl_imp.cpp.
The bug was discovered 01/04/2008. The weakness was released 01/10/2008 by TippingPoint with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is available at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-0226 since 01/10/2008. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 17814 (yaSSL 1.7.5 Buffer Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115983 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2008-007 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2008-10-09)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5884.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (39431), Exploit-DB (9953), Tenable (17814), SecurityFocus (BID 31681†) and OSVDB (41195†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-3693, VDB-3694, VDB-3815 and VDB-36812. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
