Details
A vulnerability was found in yaSSL 1.7.5 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function hashwithtransform::update of the file hash.cpp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
yaSSL 1.7.5 and earlier, as used in MySQL and possibly other products, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a Hello packet containing a large size value, which triggers a buffer over-read in the HASHwithTransform::Update function in hash.cpp.
The bug was discovered 01/04/2008. The weakness was disclosed 01/10/2008 by TippingPoint with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at xforce.iss.net. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-0227 since 01/10/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 30125 (Debian DSA-1478-1 : mysql-dfsg-5.0 - buffer overflows), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115983 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2008-007 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2008-10-09)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5884.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (39433), Tenable (30125), SecurityFocus (BID 31681†), OSVDB (41197†) and Secunia (SA28324†). The entries VDB-3693, VDB-3694, VDB-3815 and VDB-36812 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
