NetBSD 4.0 ftpd Long Command Chain cross-site request forgery

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in NetBSD 4.0 (Operating System). This affects an unknown functionality of the component ftpd. The manipulation as part of a Long Command Chain leads to a cross-site request forgery vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-352. The web application does not, or can not, sufficiently verify whether a well-formed, valid, consistent request was intentionally provided by the user who submitted the request. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

ftpd in OpenBSD 4.3, FreeBSD 7.0, NetBSD 4.0, Solaris, and possibly other operating systems interprets long commands from an FTP client as multiple commands, which allows remote attackers to conduct cross-site request forgery (CSRF) attacks and execute arbitrary FTP commands via a long ftp:// URI that leverages an existing session from the FTP client implementation in a web browser.

The weakness was disclosed 09/29/2008 by Maksymilian Arciemowicz with SecurityReason (Website). The advisory is shared at securityreason.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-4247 since 09/25/2008. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 63078 (Piwik Detection), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118349 (Solaris FTP Server Component Cross-Site Request Forgery Vulnerability).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cvsweb.netbsd.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (45434), Exploit-DB (32399), Tenable (63078), SecurityFocus (BID 31289†) and OSVDB (51371†). The entries VDB-44191 and VDB-49565 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
