A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 (Web Browser). It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function FoxDoCmd in the library fpole.ocx/foxtlib.ocx. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Stack-based buffer overflow in certain ActiveX controls in (1) FPOLE.OCX 6.0.8450.0 and (2) Foxtlib.ocx, as used in the Microsoft Visual FoxPro 6.0 fpole 1.0 Type Library; and Internet Explorer 5.01, 6 SP1 and SP2, and 7; allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long first argument to the FoxDoCmd function.

The issue has been introduced in 07/27/2005. The weakness was released 09/10/2007 by shinnai (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-4790. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known.

The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 775 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 31044 (MS08-010: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (944533)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100055 (Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS08-010)).
