Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in PHP 5.2.4 (Programming Language Software). Affected by this issue is the function iconv_strlen. The manipulation of the argument charset with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
PHP 5.2.4 and earlier allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via (1) a long string in the out_charset parameter to the iconv function; or a long string in the charset parameter to the (2) iconv_mime_decode_headers, (3) iconv_mime_decode, or (4) iconv_strlen function. NOTE: this might not be a vulnerability in most web server environments that support multiple threads, unless these issues can be demonstrated for code execution.
The bug was discovered 09/05/2007. The weakness was released 09/06/2007 by Laurent Gaffie with SecurityReason as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-4840 since 09/12/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 26942 (GLSA-200710-02 : PHP: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165666 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update php4, php5 (SUSE-SA:2008:004)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
