The Winbind nss_info extension (nsswitch/idmap_ad.c) in idmap_ad.so in Samba 3.0.25 through 3.0.25c, when the "winbind nss info" option is set to rfc2307 or sfu, grants all local users the privileges of gid 0 when the (1) RFC2307 or (2) Services for UNIX (SFU) primary group attribute is not defined.

The bug was discovered 09/11/2007. The weakness was published 09/13/2007 by Rick (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-4138 since 08/02/2007. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 17719 (Samba idmap_ad.so Winbind nss_info Extension Local Privilege Escalation), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc. and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 117417 (CentOS Security Update for Samba (CESA-2007:1016)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
