A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Word 2000/2002/2003/2007 (Word Processing Software). Affected is an unknown code of the component LFO. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. Microsoft Office Word 2000 SP3 and 2002 SP3 and Office 2004 for Mac allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a Word document with a crafted lcbPlcfBkfSdt field in the File Information Block (FIB), which bypasses an initialization step and triggers an "arbitrary free," aka "Word Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The bug was discovered 12/09/2008. The weakness was disclosed 12/09/2008 by Ricardo Narvaja (Wushi) with Core as MS08-072 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2008-4024 since 09/10/2008. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $100k and more. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS08-072 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
