Perl-Compatible Regular Expression (PCRE) library before 7.3 reads past the end of the string when searching for unmatched brackets and parentheses, which allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (crash), possibly involving forward references.

The bug was discovered 11/05/2007. The weakness was disclosed 11/07/2007 by Tavis Ormandy with Google Security Team (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-1662 since 03/24/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation.
