Samba up to 3.0.25 send_mailslot memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Samba up to 3.0.25 (File Transfer Software). This issue affects the function send_mailslot. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the send_mailslot function in nmbd in Samba 3.0.0 through 3.0.27a, when the "domain logons" option is enabled, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a GETDC mailslot request composed of a long GETDC string following an offset username in a SAMLOGON logon request.

The bug was discovered 12/10/2007. The weakness was published 12/13/2007 by Alin Rad Pop with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-6015 since 11/19/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 29343 (openSUSE 10 Security Update : cifs-mount (cifs-mount-4777)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185035 (HP-UX Running HP CIFS Server (Samba) Remote Execution of Arbitrary Code Vulnerabiity (HPSBUX02316)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8942.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (38965), Exploit-DB (4732), Tenable (29343), SecurityFocus (BID 26791†) and OSVDB (39191†). Similar entries are available at VDB-40977, VDB-40976, VDB-40975 and VDB-40974. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
