A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Intuit QuickBooks awapi4.answerworks.1. This affects an unknown part in the library awapi4.dll of the component ActiveX Control. Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in the awApi4.AnswerWorks.1 ActiveX control in awApi4.dll 4.0.0.42, as used by Vantage Linguistics AnswerWorks, and Intuit Clearly Bookkeeping, ProSeries, QuickBooks, Quicken, QuickTax, and TurboTax, allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via long arguments to the (1) GetHistory, (2) GetSeedQuery, (3) SetSeedQuery, and possibly other methods. NOTE: some of these details are obtained from third party information.
The bug was discovered 12/11/2007. The weakness was released 12/14/2007 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vantagelinguistics.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-6387 since 12/14/2007. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. A public exploit has been developed by Elazar and been published 3 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 29313 (MS07-069: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (942615)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115690 (Vantage Linguistics AnswerWorks ActiveX Control Buffer Overflow).
