A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Easy Software Products CUPS 1.2.4/1.2.9/1.2.10/1.2.12/1.3.3 (Printing Software). Affected is the function asn1_get_string of the component Backend. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-189. Integer underflow in the asn1_get_string function in the SNMP back end (backend/snmp.c) for CUPS 1.2 through 1.3.4 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted SNMP response that triggers a stack-based buffer overflow.
The bug was discovered 12/17/2007. The weakness was released 12/19/2007 by Wei Wang with McAfee (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2007-5849 since 11/06/2007. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. A public exploit has been developed in Perl. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
