Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Apple Mac OS X (Operating System) (version now known). This affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in PCRE before 7.6 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a regular expression containing a character class with a large number of characters with Unicode code points greater than 255.
The bug was discovered 01/28/2008. The weakness was disclosed 08/06/2009 with Apple as HT3757 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2008-0674 since 02/11/2008. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 18 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 31327 (FreeBSD : pcre -- buffer overflow vulnerability (f9e96930-e6df-11dc-8c6a-00304881ac9a)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116547 (Apple Mac OS X 10.5.8 and Security Update 2009-003 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2009-08-05-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at support.apple.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (40505), Tenable (31327), SecurityFocus (BID 27786†), OSVDB (41989†) and Secunia (SA36096†). The entries VDB-3959, VDB-4132, VDB-49292 and VDB-49291 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
