Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Apple Safari 4.x (Web Browser). This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Heap-based buffer overflow in ColorSync in Apple Mac OS X 10.4.11 and 10.5 before 10.5.8 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted image containing an embedded ColorSync profile.
The weakness was disclosed 06/08/2010 by Chris Evans as HT4196 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-1726 since 05/20/2009. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 47038 (Apple iTunes < 9.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities (uncredentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Peer-To-Peer File Sharing and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118109 (Apple iTunes Multiple Vulnerabilities (HT4220)).
Upgrading to version 10.5.8 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at support.apple.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (52419), Tenable (47038), SecurityFocus (BID 35954†), OSVDB (56845†) and Secunia (SA40196†). The entries VDB-4017, VDB-49292, VDB-49291 and VDB-49290 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
