Apple Mac OS X up to 10.5.0 File Descriptors denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.5.0 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the component File Descriptors. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

Apple Mac OS X 10.5 before 10.5.8 does not properly share file descriptors over local sockets, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (system crash) by placing file descriptors in messages sent to a socket that has no receiver, related to a "synchronization issue."

The weakness was disclosed 08/05/2009 by Chris Evans with Google Security Team (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-2194. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 40502 (Mac OS X 10.5.x < 10.5.8 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116547 (Apple Mac OS X 10.5.8 and Security Update 2009-003 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2009-08-05-1)).

Upgrading to version 10.5.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (52439), Tenable (40502), SecurityFocus (BID 35954†), OSVDB (56836†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1022672†). The entries VDB-3959, VDB-4017, VDB-4132 and VDB-41542 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
