Details
A vulnerability was found in mongrel 1.0.4/1.1.1/1.1.2. It has been classified as problematic. This affects an unknown code in the library lib/mongrel/handlers.rb. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:
Directory traversal vulnerability in DirHandler (lib/mongrel/handlers.rb) in Mongrel 1.0.4 and 1.1.x before 1.1.3 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via an HTTP request containing double-encoded sequences (".%252e").
The bug was discovered 12/28/2007. The weakness was disclosed 12/28/2007 (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-6612 since 01/03/2008. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a exploit are known.
